Managing your data usage:
The settings on your handset, which you control, play an important part in managing the data you use. Some handsets (especially smart phones) can be set to seek data automatically (eg email or other apps). This will use the internet and depending on your plan charges will apply for that internet access or browsing. You should consider both your phone settings and the plan you have chosen to make sure that it suits your needs and to avoid surprises.
Did you know you for example that smart phone uses data in lots of different ways? For example your Smart Phone can update its software, push email, use GPS location services or send you application updates automatically.
While these services can be very useful, saving you time, they may increase your mobile data usage without you realising. Here are some tips to manage the amount of data your phone uses for domestic use within Australia, and more importantly when roaming overseas.
Turn automatic notifications, off, eg , Facebook alerts.
Turn location services off, eg. Mapping services. (Data is used for data GPS location based services)
Turn off automatic software updates
Turn ‘Push’ email off (Push email is when your handset automatically receives emails)
Use WIFI networks where possible.
For more information be sure to consult your phones manual or its manufacturer’s website
